7 Ways to Style Black Shorts
I recently got a new pair of black shorts, so I thought I’d share some easy ideas for styling them. Below is 7 ways to style black shorts that work for spring (and those still chilly moments) and into the heat of summer.
I used just a few different tops when putting together these outfits and got 7 different outfits. You can do the same! Check your closet to see what you have that is similar and get creative to make your outfit fit you and your style!
Let’s start with the shorts….
I found these shorts at Target and they are super comfortable and perfect for summer and only $17. These are a linen blend, high-rise, paper-bag short with a modern flare and have pockets. Don’t let the casual fool you because you can dress them up as well. I’m wearing a size medium, however, I could easily wear a small. If you are between sizes, I say you can size down unless you want a little more in length, then size up!
7 Ways to Style Black Shorts
With a Casual Tee
Pair them with a solid white or a neutral striped cotton tee. Tuck the t-shirt in for a more fitted and in-style look. You can wear this combo with a cute pair of sandals or casual sneakers.

- TEE: Short Sleeve t-shirt
- BOTTOM: High-Rise Pull-on Short
With a Denim Jacket
Take your solid or striped t-shirt and elevate your look by adding a jean jacket. I paired mine with a shorter, more cropped jacket and it’s perfect to hit just as the top of the shorts so it doesn’t overtake the entire outfit and look too baggy. This is also super cute with a pair of sandals or casual sneakers for ballpark Saturdays or running errands around town.

- TOP: Short Sleeve t-shirt
- BOTTOM: High-rise Pull-on Short
- DENIM JACKET: Cropped Jean Jacket
With a Denim Button Down
I love a chambray button down! It is so versatile. If you don’t want the heavy overlay of a jean jacket, a chambray button down makes a great pairing! Throw it on over a tucked in casual tee and some casual sneakers and it’s so cute! I fell in love with this combo when I tried it and will be wearing it for sure.

- BOTTOM: High-rise Pull-on short
- OVERLAY: Denim button down
With a Chambray Top
I kept the same chambray button down from before, buttoned it up by itself and tucked it in the shorts. Love this look!

- TOP: Chambray Button down
- BOTTOM: High-rise Pull-on Short
Chambray Top Tied
For a fun look, keep the last few buttons undone and make a knotted tie just above the top of the shorts. Again, pair this with a pair of sandals or casual sneakers.
With a Bodysuit or Tank Top
Pair black shorts with a solid body suit or tank top. I love the blue of this bodysuit, but there are so many colors that work with black!

- TOP: Double-scoop Bodysuit
- BOTTOM: High-rise Pull-on Short
With a fun detailed top
For dressier look, pair black shorts with a top that has detailing to it. This can be detailed sleeves, eyelets, a detailed neck line, etc. Tuck the top in for that more fitted look and find a color that pops off the black for a good contrast and make the shirt stand out. I love the high neck line and the teal color of this top, but white or red would be beautiful. Pair this look with a set of heels!
